How to Manage Downloads In Safari

Opening Safe Files

Also in the General tab of Safari Preferences is a check box labeled "Open 'safe' files after downloading". Safari considers the following file types to be "safe":

  • Pictures
  • Movies
  • Sounds
  • PDF files
  • Text documents
  • Disk images (.dmg files)
  • Other archive types

I consider this option, which is checked and therefore active by default, to be a dangerous one if you are not extremely careful when it comes to downloading files. You may unwittingly click a link and initiate a download without being aware of it. Because of this, I recommend un-checking this option and manually locating and opening files as their downloads complete.
