Also in the General tab of Safari Preferences is a check box labeled "Open 'safe' files after downloading". Safari considers the following file types to be "safe":
- Pictures
- Movies
- Sounds
- PDF files
- Text documents
- Disk images (.dmg files)
- Other archive types
I consider this option to be a dangerous one if you are not extremely careful when it comes to downloading files. You may unwittingly click a link and initiate a download without being aware of it. Because of this, I recommend un-checking this option and manually locating and opening files as their downloads complete.
