This article explains how to use Immersive Reader (formerly Reading View) on Microsoft Edge version 8.10 and newer in Windows 10.

How to Turn On Immersive Reader

When active, Immersive Reader makes the content you're reading the focal point in the browser. To switch to Immersive Reader in Microsoft Edge:

  1. Open Microsoft Edge.

  2. Go to a website that has the content you want to read, such as a news site.

  3. Select the Immersive Reader icon, which looks like a book with a speaker on it, on the right side of the address bar. Alternatively, use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+R.

If the icon is missing or greyed out, the web page doesn't support the Immersive Reader feature.

  4. Select the Immersive Reader icon again (or press Ctrl+Shift+R) to turn off Immersive Reader.

When using this feature, the Immersive Reader icon turns blue, and Microsoft Edge reformats the web page to improve its readability and removes navigation elements. The page is formatted to fit the window, and graphics are replaced with an icon and alt text describing the image.

To have Immersive Reader read the web page to you, move the cursor to the top of the browser window or right-click anywhere on the page, and then select Read aloud.

How to Change Immersive Reader Settings

You can tweak some Immersive Reader settings to provide a better experience. To customize the settings, complete the following steps while Immersive Reader is turned on:
