2014 About.com Readers' Choice Awards: Web Browsers

For the seventh year in a row we have opened voting for the About.com Readers' Choice Awards, designed to honor the best products, features and services across many diverse categories. This is the fifth year that About Web Browsers is participating in the awards program, and we're excited to once again let the readers' voices be heard. Between February 19 and March 19, readers can pledge their allegiance to their favorite browsers and browser-related software.

The finalists in each browser-related category were selected based upon a combination of reader feedback, industry expert input and overall popularity. The eleven categories, each containing five finalists, are as follows.

Note: We have internal checks in place to detect fraudulent voting activity, and in some cases the poll results shown during voting may not reflect the accurate final counts used to determine winners.

Best Major Desktop Browser

The Best Major Desktop Browser category features finalists that are considered to be mainstream, each boasting a significant share of the overall browser market.

This year's finalists are as follows: Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Opera, and Apple Safari

Best Android Browser

The Best Android Browser category features finalists from some of the industry's major players such as Google and Mozilla, as well as a lesser known entry rapidly gaining popularity among mobile enthusiasts. Also making the cut was last year's big winner, Maxthon Cloud Browser.

This year's finalists are as follows: Chrome, Dolphin, Firefox, Maxthon Cloud Browser, and Puffin

Best iPad Browser

The Best iPad Browser category features a diverse group of finalists that run on the popular Apple tablet, including the device's integrated browser as well as those available via the App Store, both free and paid.

This year's finalists are as follows: Chrome, Dolphin Browser, Maxthon Cloud Browser, Opera Mini, and Safari

Best iPhone/iPod touch Browser

The finalists in the Best iPhone/iPod touch Browser category includes some familiar names as well as a couple of lesser known options, each offering their own unique feature set.

This year's finalists are as follows: Atomic Web Browser, Chrome, Dolphin Browser, Perfect Web Browser, and Safari

Best Overall (Non-Security) Add-On

The Best Overall (Non-Security) Add-On category features browser add-ons, plug-ins or extensions not related to privacy or security. Privacy and security-related add-ons were given their own separate category. Add-ons which run on multiple browsers and platforms, as well as those only compatible with a specific configuration were allowed. The five that made the cut are certainly a versatile bunch, offering functionality improvements in several areas.

This year's finalists are as follows: Booly, Flagfox, FlashGot Mass Downloader, Lightning Newtab, and Tab Mix Plus

Best Privacy/Security Add-On

The Best Privacy/Security Add-On category allows browser add-ons, plug-ins, or extensions that are designed to protect your privacy and ensure your safety while surfing the Web. This includes add-ons which run on multiple browsers and platforms, as well as those only compatible with a specific configuration. The five finalists include the 2013 and 2012 winners, as well as three other formidable choices.

This year's finalists are as follows: Adblock Plus, Click & Clean, NoScript Security Suite, Self-Destructing Cookies, and WOT (Web of Trust)

Best Small Market Desktop Browser

The Best Small Market Desktop Browser is reserved for any Web browsers not considered to be mainstream (Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc.). Independent browsers are normally developed by smaller development companies or individual developers. They are usually not created to compete directly with the "big boys", but rather to focus on niche markets.

This year's finalists are as follows: Avant Browser, Maxthon Cloud Browser, SlimBoat, Tor Browser, and Torch Browser

Best Browser Theme

The Best Browser Theme category features any skins or themes that alter the appearance of your favorite browser. Themes which run on multiple browsers and platforms, as well as those only compatible with a specific configuration are allowed.

This year's finalists are as follows: Beautiful Landscape (Chrome), Blue RP7 (Opera), Into The Mist (Chrome), Love Smoke (Chrome), and Sunset Over Water (Firefox)

The Best User Script category contains any browser user scripts (Greasemonkey scripts, Google Chrome user scripts, etc.) whatsoever. This includes scripts which run on multiple browsers and platforms as well as those only compatible with specific configurations.

This year's finalists are as follows: Download YouTube Videos As MP4, Rapidshare Links Checker, Social Fixer for Facebook, The Cavern Links Checker, and YousableTubeFix

Best Google Chrome App

One of two new categories added in 2014, the Best Chrome App finalists were selected from hundreds of Web-based applications that integrate with Google's browser.

This year's finalists are as follows: Angry Birds, Entanglement Web App, Evernote Web, Pixlr-o-matic, and Webcam Toy

Best Windows Phone Browser

As the Windows Phone operating system finds its way onto more devices, the number of apps available for the platform continues to multiply exponentially. With this rising popularity comes our second new category for 2014, Best Windows Phone Browser.

This year's finalists are as follows: Incognito Browser, Internet Explorer, Nokia Xpress, SurfCube 3D Browser, and UC Browser
