MMORPGs
As someone very familiar with the MMORPG genre since the early days of Ultima Online, I've crafted a hammer or two and slayed my share of dragons. This entertainment type has progressed tremendously over the past decade, evolving into games like the cultural phenomenon World of Warcraft. Every MMO takes pieces from its predecessors, adding its own unique features to standard building blocks. These basic staples of gameplay include PvP and PvE combat, crafting, magic, and property ownership. Not all games within the spectrum include every one of these features, but most incorporate at least a few of them.
RuneScape Overview

RuneScape has been around for quite some time, and has done its part to set certain trends within the MMORPG world. It has all the aspects of a "classic" game within the genre, as well as some unique unto itself. With a large member base and content that is continuously expanding, it certainly has a lot to offer MMO fans as well as beginners. One thing that separates it from the competition is the fact that players are not required to choose a specific character class, allowing you to experiment with all types of combat, magic, and secondary skills. This freedom is a breath of fresh air for most, while some hardcore gamers challenge what they deem to be a lack of structure.
Where RuneScape Shines
What really separates RuneScape from the other MMORPGs is the fact that it is played within your web browser. When you think of a browser game, a massive world containing millions of characters is certainly not the first thing that pops in your head. However, this is what RuneScape has managed to achieve. Whereas most other games of this ilk require CDs and an installed application of substantial size, all you need to play in this fantasy realm is a browser and an Internet connection. The game is free to play. However, most of the really cool stuff requires a paid membership (as low as $5 per month). All things considered, this is still a bargain. While most MMOs require you to purchase the game and pay a heftier monthly membership fee, RuneScape lets you in at a minimal cost. Granted, it cannot stand up to the application-based games when it comes to graphics and some aspects of gameplay. However, what it does offer is an enjoyable experience and a welcome distraction for countless hours. You may find yourself immersed before you know it.
MMO Beginners

Beginners and those new to the MMORPG genre may be a little timid regarding where to get started. Fear not. The game's initial starting point, Tutorial Island, guides players through everything from learning how to cast a spell to the best way to catch a fish. RuneScape truly is a treasure among web browser games.
