About.com Rating 3.5

By , About.com Guide

The Bottom Line
Snake is a Firefox add-on which lets you play a variant of the game Snake, also known as Worm, in your browser window. Try to eat as many red balls in the grid without crashing into a wall or, worse yet, your ever-growing snake's body.
Pros
  • Some minor differences aside, this game does a nice job of mimicking the original version.
  • Although it is a fairly simple game, Snake can be enjoyable and somewhat addictive.
  • The keyboard controls are very easy to use.
  • Unlike a lot of add-ons, there is no presence in the browser's main window, saving valuable space.
Cons
  • There are no music or sound effects included.
  • There is no way to modify difficulty or speed settings.
  • Unlike some other Snake/Worm clones, this version does not allow you to go through walls.
  • Some sudden movements cause the snake to incorrectly crash into itself.
  • There is no mechanism available to display or save high scores.
Description
  • The Snake add-on is a derivative of the classic Snake/Worm game, played in a Firefox pop-up window.
  • The game is launched from a link placed in Firefox's Tools menu.
  • The object of the game is to move your snake around the grid, eating the red balls that appear without crashing.
  • A new game can be started by hitting the New Game button or pressing the N key.
  • The game is controlled by using the keyboard arrow keys.
  • As you progress through a level your snake's body progressively grows, increasing the game's difficulty.
  • Your current score as well as the current level you are on is displayed at the top of the game window.
  • To pause your current game, simply hit the P key. To resume the game, hit P again.
Guide Review - Snake
Based on the classic Snake/Worm arcade game, this Firefox add-on brings the hungry reptile to your browser window. As you slither around the grid chasing down those elusive red pellets, your body continues to lengthen to the point where making a simple turn becomes a risky endeavor. Snake will probably excite those Firefox users who are familiar with the old versions, and may even reel in some gamers from newer generations. Like most games from its era, the goal as well as the gameplay itself are relatively simple. However, as the levels advance and the body grows, it can be prove to be quite challenging. The areas in which Snake really falls short are the lack of audio and being unable to choose difficulty levels. Even the simplest sound effects would make this add-on more enjoyable and for more experienced players the speed on the first level is just too slow to offer much of a challenge. There are also some questions about the game's stability when attempting to make multiple maneuvers in a rapid fashion. For these reasons, I cannot give it a higher rating. However, I do feel that this is a respectable adaptation of something vintage and pure and can definitely offer some enjoyment to Firefox users.
