Firefox to Get a Speed Boost

Monday August 25, 2008

Mozilla has announced a new project called TraceMonkey which, according to VP of Engineering Mike Shaver, adds native code compilation to the company's existing JavaScript engine. Already part of the Firefox 3.1 Alpha tree, TraceMonkey significantly boosts JavaScript performance by using a Just-In-Time (JIT) compiler. Early benchmark scores indicate that this new component may eventually vault Firefox to the head of the browser pack when it comes to page load time.
