Netscape Says Farewell

Wednesday January 2, 2008

Identified by many as the Web's first browser, Netscape Navigator carries with it a rich and storied lineage. That history is soon coming to a close, however, with AOL/Time Warner announcing the browser's demise late last week. No new versions will be released going forward, and updates and other support will be discontinued on February 1.

This marks the end of an era for the browser PC World dubbed the "Best Tech Product of All Time" last Spring. Dating back to 1994, Netscape once held a large majority of the web browser market. As the years passed it took a back seat to Microsoft's Internet Explorer but still boasted a loyal following. The most recent version, Navigator 9, had some pretty interesting features and tied in with Netscape's news portal. The browser did not make a big splash, however, holding less than 1% of the market as of last month. The time has come to say goodbye to an Internet icon. Don't be sad, however, because Netscape has left its mark on the web browser landscape for many years to come.
