Microsoft Releases Its Flash Alternative

Thursday September 6, 2007

In an effort to compete with Adobe Flash, Microsoft announced the release of Silverlight 1.0 yesterday. The cross-browser, cross-platform plug-in can deliver high end video content to most web browsers in both Windows and Mac OS X. By offering a programming model that supports JavaScript, .NET, AJAX, and other languages, the company hopes to entice developers to make the switch from Flash.

A Linux implementation of Silverlight, named Moonlight, is currently being developed by the Mono Project. Microsoft has given its full support to this product. Developers interesting in learning about Silverlight can get started with an informative set of videos and documentation provided free of charge on the official site.
