Ten Percent of Web Pages Contain Malware

Monday May 14, 2007

"The sophistication of adversaries has increased over time and exploits are becoming increasingly more complicated and difficult to analyze. Unfortunately, average computer users have no means to protect themselves from this threat. Their browser can be compromised just by visiting a web page and become the vehicle for installing multitudes of malware on their systems."

Pretty scary, huh? Google's Ghost in the Browser study provides a sobering view on the amount of web pages that are infected with malicious code. Out of the approximately 4.5 million pages tested, 450,000 had the capability to install malware on a visitor's hard drive while almost 700,000 others were deemed suspicious. By using a combination of social engineering trickery along with exploiting web browser weaknesses, hackers have become much more aggressive as of late. While the results of this study may not come as a complete surprise, the enormity of the numbers and the reality of the situation is still a bit staggering.
